Marylyn Harris, RN, MSN, MBA is a Cybersecurity Consultant, Speaker, Writer and Social Entrepreneur. Harris is a decorated (former) U.S. Army Nurse and Gulf War Veteran. She was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1992. Harris earned her bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) at Prairie View A & M University’s College of Nursing, master’s degree in Psychiatric Nursing (MSN) at UTHealth School of Nursing (Houston) where she is the 2014 UTHealth Distinguished Nurse Alumni. Harris earned graduate certificates in Information Security at EC-Council University (2021) and in Healthcare Information Technology at UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics (2010). Harris holds a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of St. Thomas’ Cameron School of Business (Houston).
In 2018, Harris pivoted her career to Healthcare Cybersecurity and began studying IT Networking at Rackspace’s Open Cloud Academy in San Antonio (TX). She has attended over 125 Technology events over the last three years and received numerous scholarships, grants and requests to speak about her “non-traditional” career. Harris’ accolades include, the SAIC/ISC2 “Cyber Warrior ’19” Scholarship, 3CS ’19 Speaker, BlackHat ’19 Scholar, Grace Hopper ’19 Scholar, Diana Initiative ’20 Speaker, WiCyS ’20 Awardee, RSA ‘20 Scholar and the HIMSS ‘ 20 National Graduate Scholarship Awardee and 2021 “TNA Nurse HERO.”
Harris is a revered Board Member and has served with numerous local organizations, including the Houston Area Urban CDC, and the Greater Houston Black Nurses Association. She has received two (2) National Appointments. At the request of the SBA Administrator, she served from 2010-2013, on the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Advisory Committee on Veterans Business Affairs. At the request of the Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary, she served from 2015 to 2020, she served with Research Advisory Committee (RAC) of Gulf War Veterans Illnesses. Currently, Ms. Harris serves on the Advisory Board of SIM Women – Houston Chapter, Nova Southeastern University – Research Division, the University of St. Thomas’ Cybersecurity Program and on the Advisory Board of Capitol Technology University Cybersecurity Program in Washington, D.C.
Harris is the President and CEO of Harrland Healthcare Consulting, LLC, a Healthcare Management Consulting Firm. Harrland provides Healthcare SME Staffing, Training, Research and Healthcare IT Security and Privacy Services (new). Harris serves as the Founder and Executive Director of the country’s first Women Veterans Business Center (WVBC). Founded in 2010, the Center (WVBC) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that “educates and empowers Women Veterans (and Military Families) to start and grow professional careers and “wealth-generating” Veteran-Owned Businesses.” To date, the WVBC has outreached to over 25,000 Stakeholders and assisted hundreds of Veteran-Owned Businesses to start and grow. Harris currently hosts a free, virtual Women Veterans Tech Careers and Tech Business Initiative.
Harris is a dedicated community servant leader, Board Member and a valuable advocate of several civic, professional, military and faith-based organizations. She travels the country speaking and training diverse audiences. Harris is the recipient of many awards. In 2020, Harris was honored as a “Woman Who Means Business” by the Houston Business Journal (HBJ) and in February 2021, the Women Veterans Business Center was honored as a “Helping Hand” organization in creating Diverse Businesses. In 2015, the Houston Chronicle named Harris a “Houston HERO.” In 2013, Harris was honored at the White House by President Barack Obama and named a “Champion of Change” for her pivotal work and advocacy growing Women Veteran-Owned Businesses nationally.
